New Microsoft Dynamics AX RTW (Release To Web)

Microsoft made the first version of the new Microsoft Dynamics AX available. You call it RTW, which is short for Release To Web (the old-fashioned term would have been RTM – Release To Manufacturing)

Microsoft has released the public version of the ‘new’ Microsoft Dynamics AX. This version was also code-named ‘Rainier’,‘AX 7’, ‘AX 2015’ and now just “Microsoft Dynamics AX” as Microsoft refers to it. The name change is significant because this release, due early in 2016, will be architected specifically for the cloud and will initially only be available in the cloud on Azure with on-premise versions to come later. As a cloud-based application, Dynamics AX will now be under continuous maintenance.  So, no version name necessary.

Let's take a look at some new features in AX

Better Navigation, Less Clicks
MS reduced the number of clickable take to navigate through the modules. Now when you click on the modules, you will see a full page of all the menu items related to that module. You no longer have to go click through the various menus.

Personalize Toolbar
We still have the right click-personalize ability on any field. But now, if you wanna do multiple personalizations on a single form, it's best to go options-personalize this form. This will open up the personalize toolbar which will allow you to do all personalization tasks. For instance;
  • "Right-click-->personalize" on the grid
  • Select "personalize this form"
  • Select the "add" tool
  • Select the grid as the place you want to add a field.
  • System will show you all of the columns in the related tables
  • Select fields that you think you need in the released products form
  • <<Item group is selected for this example>>

Dashboard
The dashboard is the default start page of the Dynamics AX application and changes can be done on workspace cards (moving, hiding, renaming). Since workspaces are designed to give you an overview to work that you do, AX allows you to take content from a workspace and promote it up to your dashboard.
  • Drill into the master planning workspace
  • Here you can see multiple tiles allow user to keep track of the things related to selected workspace
  • Right-click item - personalize
  • Select -pin to dashboard
  • Pin all items you want
  • Go navigate back to dashboard and notice that all of those as tiles underneath related workspace
  • Now you can jump directly one of those lists
Workspaces
Workspaces are new concept for Dynamics AX. They are designed to be the place you would go to do the work for an activity. By personalizing the workspaces to your needs they will become even more useful.

Toggle Between Header - Lines View
Previously users had to go to -options tab- and go to -change view- and select view type. Now, when you and a sales order, purchase order or invoice, transactional document, you will simply be able to click on -header- and -lines- right within the form. You can see this in any form that has a header-line structure such "purchase invoice posting" form.

Lookup Filtering
Now users are able to type names on ID fields in different forms. For instance, you can type customer name on customer account field while creating sales order or type item name on item ID field while creating sales order line.

Keyboarding
There are many shortcuts to perform many things! You can even create a sales order without using a mouse!
